Rochford District Council

Thank you for your interest in this key leadership role at Rochford District and Brentwood Borough Council. While our two authorities do not share a boundary, they share many characteristics including similar sized budgets, commonality in economies and approach to service design.

Our partnership is still relatively new and so we are on an exciting journey, combining the resources of our organisations so that we can achieve more together for our residents. Highly developed leadership and relationship building skills will be central to our success.

About the candidate and the role:

It’s important that you can bring clarity of direction and purpose to others and ensure that colleagues understand the rationale for and potential of change, as well as their role in getting us to our destination.

You’ll join the councils’ leadership team, which is made up of the Joint Chief Executive and one other Strategic Director. As Deputy Chief Executive you’ll play a highly visible corporate role, working closely with elected members and key stakeholders from both council areas. As Strategic Director you’ll act as the organisational lead across a diverse portfolio of services that include Customer & Data Insight, Resources, Policy and Transformation.

We don’t have a fixed view of your professional background, other than you’ll be an accomplished organisational leader who is politically experienced and astute, and who can bring a highly flexible and creative to rethinking how vital public services can be delivered across two organisations. You’ll have the strategic vision to imagine what council services can look like in years to come, and the practical leadership skills to create a clear roadmap to deliver this.

It's vital that you offer highly developed relationship building skills and a commitment to the principles of co-design. And, as a visible leader within the councils, you’ll play a central role in articulating the rationale for change to colleagues and building support and impetus behind the transformation programme.

Success in the role will identify you as a highly capable local authority leader, and you can be assured that you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and experience in a highly diverse range of settings.

Benefits of working here:

You will have the opportunity to work across both Council’s which are located in the south of Essex and approximately 20 miles apart.

The two areas present a blend of characteristics.  Brentwood is well-known for its green space and woodlands, even though it’s located within easy commuting distance of London – and the new Elizabeth Line has made this connection even better, with faster and more frequent trains. Rochford is a mix of urban and rural and London Southend Airport sits within its boundaries.

We are currently operating a hybrid model of working, which enables our employees to work smarter, focusing on the importance of physical connections to meet the needs of those we provide services for, whilst balancing that with the ability to work remotely.
